Stéphane Labeyrie

Hailed as a dynamic and impressive performer, Stephane Labeyrie joined the Orchestre de Paris as Principal Tuba in 1998. Subsequently, he held the positions of Principal Tuba of the National Opera of Lyon under Kent Nagano and the National Orchestra of the Capitole of Toulouse under Michel Plasson Stephane Labeyrie has performed at numerous festivals as a soloist and/or chamber music player throughout Europe, the United States and Asia. In June of 2007, he has participated in the closing concert of the International Tuba Festival in Chicago, USA and in December 2006 he won by unanimous decision of the jury the First Prize of the International Tuba Competition in Sydney, Australia. At Michel Plasson's invitation, he appeared as a soloist with the National Orchestra of Toulouse on the French TV show: "the Four Seasons" in 2000 as well as at the Victoires de la Musique in 2001. In addition, Stephane Labeyrie has won numerous prizes and awards such as the first prize of the international competition of Riva del Garda, Italy in 1997; the first prize of the international competition of Markneukirchen, Germany in May of 1996 and the the special prize of that same competition in 1992. . An avid chamber music player, Stephane Labeyrie is a member of IBY6 brass ensemble. He currently performs on a Yamaha tuba and has frequently consulted on the development of Yamaha's brass instruments. Since 2005, Stephane Labeyrie has been a member of the Brass faculty at the Music Conservatory of Lausanne teaching tuba playing Born in France, Stephane Labeyrie studied the tuba with Marc Ursule at the National Regional Conservatory of Toulouse where in 1991 upon graduation he was awarded the Gold Medal in Tuba playing. He then continued his education at the National Superior Conservatory of Lyon joining the class of Mel Culbertson and graduated with honours in 1995.
